As a Sr Policy Analyst with the National Education Association (NEA), Rowena Shurn‘s focus is systems-level and leadership development to include coaching and mentoring. She leads the work of accomplished teaching and National Board Certification and supports the work of the Teacher Leadership Institute. Currently, she is leading a team that will implement a national coaching institute for educators.
Before joining the NEA, she spent more than 13 years in public education in Prince George’s County, MD as an elementary and middle school mathematics and science teacher, STEM coordinator, Peer Assistance and Review Consulting Teacher, and Peer Assistance and Review Liaison. During that time, she worked with various levels of district leadership to design and develop professional learning opportunities for educators throughout Prince George’s County.
Rowena was a member at large of the Board of Directors for the Maryland State Education Association. She co-chaired the associations’ Instructional and Professional Development Committee. Rowena worked with local and state leaders within Maryland on various initiatives. She was the teacher representative on the Teacher Induction, Recruitment, and Retention Act Workgroup. There she worked with stakeholders to create synergy and alignment of educational policies that impact educators, throughout the career continuum, in Maryland. In addition, she was one of the teacher leaders to provide guidance on developing policies for Maryland’s 21st Century Schools facilities.
